Petrus Spinogranatum - Gaffe Specimen

Description

I give you, from the depths of the South China Sea, the skeleton of a Petrus spinogranatum, also known as the lesser sea grenade.

This curious crustaceanesque creature burrows into the sandy floor of the ocean, waving its feathery antennae in order to attract prey. The unwary fish shall swim by, and the sea grenade, true to its name, shall eject one of its venomous spines (which are constantly replaced with newly-formed barbs) into the unfortunate victim. Its eyes, here replicated with pearlized glass, are large so as to provide excellent vision for the sea grenade to aim its arsenal of harpoon-like spines, which can be used both as hunting implements and defensive weapons.

My entry, under the name Madame Curatrix, for the Brass Goggles Forum ([link]) October 2013 contest with the theme "Things In Jars." The challenge was to create some type of preserved specimen presentation of a creature or other organism of one's own design.

This was my very first specimen build and was made from whatever odds and ends I could find in my supplies at the time I noticed the contest. Parts used include a large rodent skull of some sort, a deer(?) vertebra bone, an old turtle shell, a seashell, some feathers, plastic pearls for jewelry, wood toothpicks and paper. I actually have two of the brass lantern I used as my 'jar' - and ironically had a some vague notion of a specimen project in mind when I bought them at a flea market a few months ago. Glad they came in handy here! It was a fun build and a great idea for a contest!
