Artist's Comments
This is the unedited version of my entry for the Llumina Press Susan Kay Phantom cover contest. The final cover design had some color changes and words added in Photoshop but for now I'll post this version.
The two side panels represent Erik's warring personas as the Angel of Doom and the Angel of Music and were meant to have a stonecarved, statuesque appearance. In addition the skull face of the Angel of Doom could represent Erik while the feminine features of the Angel of music could be Christine - that's up to interpretation.
The central panel, of course, is Erik, the Phantom of the Opera himself, with a full face mask and white rose. A lot of the more subtle shading was lost in scanning but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out overall.
